Precious, of the essence

Lauren Stenning

I try my best to keep to it,

to manage it like money,

not a penny do I seek to borrow.

But I often worry that I’m wasting it,

with no way of regaining what’s been lost.

I can see it in the distance,

running away, pace by pace,

without the means to chase the scenes.

Sometimes I think I see it fly,

with its invisible wings, it passes by.

I become obsessed with how to spend it,

wondering if it’s worth saving,

or if I should let it drag on

like a repetitive song.

If only it would stand still a while

and let me run ahead a mile.

I promise myself I’ll make it up,

though I end up taking way too much,

I can’t help but think there’s not enough.

They say to use it effectively,

but surely there’s an element of subjectivity,

because it cannot be simultaneously

precious, and of the essence.

Its ticking begins as a whisper as the lights go out,

but it’s not long before it begins to shout.

I’m losing it without a doubt.

Everyone tells me I’m doing great,

they can’t feel the burning haste

which makes me think I’m running late.

Editors for Precious, of the essence not yet setup.

New Beginnings is our third and final volume of 2020. It is also our longest yet, with close to 100 pieces having been sent in for review from over 80 writers. Additionally, this volume marks a step towards making our initiative even more inclusive, having opened submissions for art and photography, too.

2021 may not be the new beginning for which we are all hoping. In fact, it is likely that the world will stay largely the same. However, that doesn’t stop us doing what we can to make it a little better. In supporting and being involved in an initiative whose primary motivation is to build one another up, our team and readership have certainly proven to be committed to making positive change already.
